At each location, Rick will present a 45 minute demonstration and then provide guidance to the students in plein air techniques. An award winning “Plein Air” painter and teacher, Rick McClure has been painting professionally for more than 25 years. Throughout his career he has enjoyed success with a variety of media including contemporary watercolor and large acrylic figurative works. However, his true passion is found in capturing both cityscape and landscape en plein aire. Many of his on location gems stand on their own while others form the basis for larger studio works, all of which sparkle with spontaneity. These 4 locations will offer artists a wonderful variety of Oklahoma’s most beautiful landscapes to inspire and feed their creative spirit. This course of study will include every step needed in the creative process, from the initial concept, to the preparation of the painting surface and the actual painting. This plein-air workshop will explore the principles and techniques of painting on location. Students will complete a series of small plein air studies with emphasis on spontaneity and freshness. August 21, 2010: Will Rogers Nature Center, Oklahoma City Our first location is Will Rogers Nature Center where students will have the opportunity to paint these historic gardens located in the heart of Oklahoma City. While at the Gardens, visitors can wander along winding paths where botanical delights await at every turn. Inside the garden walls, visitors are surrounded by thousands of roses, irises, azaleas, daylilies and peonies, among other colorful flowers and plants. The rose garden is surrounded by two lakes sits on 10 acres of pristine park land and features hundreds of varieties of trees, including Oklahoma native species as well as specimens rarely found in the state. October 9th, 2010: Quartz Mountain, Lone Wolf Our second location is Quartz Mountain Nature Park which features beautiful landscapes, wild animals and natural resources. Quartz Mountain in Lone Wolf nourishes the creative spirit of those who visit and as they hone their skills. The scenic lake and ancient mountains that surround the Quartz Mountain Lodge can be viewed, enjoyed and portrayed through a myriad of interpretations. Everyone leaves with a sense of awe for the natural beauty of the area. Visit the arts lodge and view works that feature beautiful landscapes, wild animals and natural resources. Additionally, contemporary art from some of the region’s best artists is on display, as the collection is owned by the Oklahoma Arts Institute. April 16th, 2011: Martin Park Nature Center, Oklahoma City, OK Our third location is Martin Park Nature Center, a recreational area and a wildlife sanctuary. Many animals make their homes in and around the various native plants in Martin Park. Birds, butterflies, squirrels, and deer are just a few of the animals in the park. Fortunate visitors may catch a glimpse of a deer, coyote, owl or armadillo. Your powers of observation, the season of the year and luck contribute to observing these uncaged animals. Outside the nature center, 3.5 miles of hiking trails curl through woods and grasslands. One graveled trail is wheelchair accessible. Other trails are of gravel and packed soil, containing short stretches of moderate slopes and occasional steps. May 21st, 2011: Chickasaw National Recreation Area, Sulpher Our fourth location is Chickasaw National Recreation Area near Sulpher, OK. As Oklahoma's oldest national park area, the Chickasaw National Recreation Area has been a refuge for outdoor traditions for over a century. At Chickasaw National Recreation Area the power of place is evident to even the casual observer: cool creeks flowing over travertine terraces; the silhouette of a great blue heron perched on the shore of the Lake of the Arbuckles; local residents coming to fill jugs with mineral water; and the idyllic escape so many find through visits to the park.
