Expressive Stitch Workshop

Capitalizing on the time Mary Ruth Smith will be in Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Art Guild will sponsor a two day workshop --- "The Expressive Stitch"

This workshop will be beneficial and adaptive to ALL SKILL LEVELS.

Explore how simple stitches can be used to make rich personal and meaningful imagery. After being introduced to ways stitch can be used for drawing, embellishing and constructing, students will create several small studies, each depicting a different stitch or mixture of stitches. Various background treatments (transfer dyes, for example) for stitch, from painted and printed whole cloth to patchwork, will be introduced through demonstrations and examples. For all levels of ability.

Slides will highlight artists who have used stitch in the most uncomplicated, yet compelling manner, to communicate ideas, personal concerns and concepts.

Supplies needed by students:

2 yards of 100% cotton bleached or unbleached muslin (44/45” wide); washed & pressed.

Any scrap fabrics you might have; leftover fabric pieces have wonderful and unexpected shapes and can provide interest and variety.

4-5 skeins of black embroidery thread

Other embroidery threads in color range of choice

Other small-scale threads or yarns you might wish to use

2 small artist canvas stretcher frames, approximately 18” x 18” (not embroidery frames). This is an approximate size. Other suggested sizes you can select from: 16” x 18”, 17” x 19”, etc. You can stretcher bars/strips at Hobby Lobby or an art supply store like Jerry's Art Arama.

Lightweight tack gun and staples

Sewing and embroidery needles to accommodate threads and yarns you bring

One small blunt pointed needle (tapestry needle)

A good pair of fabric scissors

Paper scissors

Thimble, if you wear one when sewing or embroidering

Paper, pencil, black fine line marking pen

12” ruler

Supplies for purchase: Additional supply charge of $10 to be paid at workshop to Mary Ruth Smith.

A selection of polyester and blended fabrics for you to choose a piece or several for one project.

Prepared disperse dyed papers for transferring images to synthetics and blends.

For you to purchase if you desire to use one or share one:

Mary Ruth will order black nylon chiffon scarves for you to purchas at $6.95. You are not obligated to buy one - only if you want to buy one and use one in your work. These scarves provide the sheerest of fabric to use for overlays when stitching (anchoring) shapes to a ground fabric without turning under raw edges.
