Upon
retiring from a 34 year career in newspaper advertising I revived an old
interest in creating art forms on a wood lathe. I have always had a
great appreciation for the beauty and the endless variations in the
grain of wood. I work mostly with burled and spalted wood. I also like
to work with pieces that have bark inclusions, which when turned leaves
a void in the surface of the sculpture and many times can be enhanced
with turquoise inlay. Because of the variations in the woodgrain, burls,
spalting, and voids, no two pieces are alike. The challenge of creating
something beautiful and unlike any other has been the inspiration for
the more than 1,000 pieces I have produced in the past 10 years.
Searching for, and finding just the right peice of wood is a source of
enjoyment that is nearly as rewarding as admiring the finished
sculpture. I take great pride in having had several of my choice
sculptures being judged as best-of -show at art shows where I've
exhibited. I look forward to the continuing enjoyment of searching for,
and working with the hidden beauty in a piece of wood from nature's
magnificent trees.
